East London Line

SHOREDITCH (Pt.2)

(1876 - 2006)

The planned closure of this station as part of the works for the East London extension should have occurred years ago. Indeed the extension to Dalston Junction that caused the closure (and eventual replacement) of this station should have been completed this year. As it is, construction is well behind the originally proposed 2006 completion date.

For a full history of the East London line, see Clive's UndergrounD Lines Guide.

Map showing a few areas of interest:

- The yellow shading is the now demolished Broad Street station. Its line north of New Inn Yard will be taken over by the East London line extension.

- The purple area is Liverpool Street station. Shoreditch station at one time had a through connection to this station.

- The light red area is the first G.E.R. terminus (replaced by Liverpool St) which subsequently was used as a goods station. Its site will be used for the new Shoreditch High Street station.

- The green area is the recently closed Shoreditch station on the East London Line. The route of its connection to the old Broad Street line is indicated by the blue line.

- The station seen on the old Broad Street line at the top of the map is its own Shoreditch station, closed in 1940. By taking over this line, the East London line will have two disused Shoreditch stations on its route!

Street level view showing the cutting containing the station in Dec 2006, six months after closure - the rails are rusting, most of the signs have been removed, and although it is hard to see in this photo, the staircase connecting the left hand platform to the station building has been demolished.

The continuation of the line under the station building, to its former connection with the GER line into Liverpool Street is obvious. On the top right is the original route of the GER line into its first terminus (Bishopsgate), relegated to goods workings after the opening of Liverpool Street.

The platform area can also be seen from some trains to/from Liverpool St mainline terminus. One such view in Sep 2007 revealed that the platform area had been filled in by several metres of spoil. Whether this is permanent or not is unknown.

View westward from the station building showing the GER tracks into Liverpool Street. The foilage indicates the track position of the one-time connection of the East London line into Liverpool Street. The viaduct on the right provided the route into the original Bishopsgate terminus. Its bridge over Brick Lane was removed sometime between 2003 and 2006, presumably to be replaced by a stronger one for the new extension.

It's barely noticable from this photo but someone has underlined the words 'to permanently close' and written "split infinitive" next to them!
